Swimming

In the Netherlands we often think everyone can swim (well), because we are taught swimming at school. But that is certainly not true for everyone. An increasing number of drownings shows us that swimming is not as normal for everyone as we think. And not only foreigners drown, also the swimming skills of the Dutch are starting to fall short. Less than half of the school children get through the entire ´swimming-ABC´. Which might mean they aren’t able to swim well in deep or open water.

The swimming program at the VU Sports Centre takes place on Mondays between 8 and 10 PM. As you might know, this is not at our own location, but at the ´Zuiderbad´ swimmingpool of the municipality of Amsterdam. Between 8 and 9 PM there is swimming class for beginners. If you can’t swim yet – or don’t know how to swim well, this is the right class for you! We’ll teach you all the skills you need for swimming from the beginning. After that, from 9 till 10 PM there is a swimming class for beginners and swimming as a workout.

Swimming with VU Sports centre

In the swimming pool ´Zuiderbad´ you’ll find swimming practice for swimming beginners and a swimming practice to work on physical fitness for the more advanced swimmers.

Swimming at the VU Sports Centre

VU Sports Centre offers a swimming program to promote and increase swimming skills. Unfortunately, we don’t have our own pool. That is why we rent a lane in the pool ‘Zuiderbad’. This pool is at the Hobbemakade, near the Rijksmuseum. This swimming pool has been a popular place for swimming enthusiasts for almost a 100 year and gets an average of 500 visitors a day. This wonderful building is from 1897 and was originally built as an indoor bicycle school. In 1912 the pool was opened in this building. The pool was basically put on the cycling floor. You’ll only find an indoor pool here. More information about the Zuiderbad can be found on the website of the municipality of Amsterdam.

As you can read above, this is not at our own location, but at the ‘Zuiderbad’ swimmingpool of the municipality of Amsterdam. Between 8 and 9 PM there is swimming class for beginners. After that, from 9 till 10 PM there is a swimming class for beginners and swimming as a workout. This class is for people who have learnt to swim a little bit already and are now allowed to try it in the deeper water too. Besides that, it is also possible to maintain your physique by swimming and to improve your techniques.

To take part in the swimming classes you’ll need to buy a separate swimming plan. You can buy this online or at one of our two locations.
