What is Wushu?
It literally means martial art, but you may also know Wushu by its other name: Kung Fu. Wushu is an ancient Chinese martial art consisting of different styles. In modern wushu we mainly know Sanda and Taolu. Sanda means 'untied hand' and refers to sparring, while Taolu has more movement (forms). Taolu can be divided into three forms: northern, southern and Tai Chi. Northern is elegant and acrobatic and southern is fierce and aggressive. Tai Chi is an internal form of breathing with gentle movements.
A Wushu form consists of various movements, from graceful to aggressive, from acrobatics to animal imitation. Acrobatic jumps are also part of Wushu, such as flips, cartwheels without hands and various kicks in the air. Well-known actors who have Wushu as a background are, for example, Bruce Lee, Jet Li, Jackie Chan and Donnie Yen.
