Exhibition: 60 Years of Sportcentrum VU

Last Tuesday, 27 October, saw the opening of the exhibition marking 60 years of Sportcentrum VU: ‘Mens sana in corpo sano’. A retrospective exhibition on the development of student sport and Sportcentrum VU over the past 60 years.

The exhibition focuses on the importance of sport for people, alongside studying or working. ‘Mens sana in corpo sano’; a healthy mind in a healthy body. Through texts, photographs and videos, the timeline takes us on a playful journey – symbolised by a climbing frame – from 1880 to the present day. It covers the beginnings of student sport, the development of the clap skate, the COVID-19 pandemic and all the developments currently taking place.

The initiative for the exhibition was taken by Arie Koops, director of Sportcentrum VU. The design is by art director Heleen ten Voorde. The research and texts were provided by university historian Ab Flipse and sports historian Jurryt van de Vooren, author of the book *Een bijzondere beweging. 125 jaar studentensport op de Vrije Universiteit* (2022).

The exhibition is open to all users of the Sportcentrum and other interested parties.
